Myths vs. Facts

Media narratives don't always match the documented record. Below are side-by-side comparisons of widely repeated claims versus what primary sources, transcripts, and official data actually show. Every fact is sourced so you can verify it yourself.

We are not asking you to agree with any policy or support any politician. We are asking you to compare what you've been told with what the record shows, and decide for yourself.

Common Narrative

Trump called neo-Nazis 'very fine people' after Charlottesville.

What the Record Shows

In the same press conference, Trump explicitly said 'I'm not talking about the neo-Nazis and the white nationalists, because they should be condemned totally.' He was referring to people on both sides of the debate about removing Confederate statues, not to the extremist groups present. The full transcript and video confirm this, yet the shortened version persists in media coverage years later.

Common Narrative

Trump told people to inject bleach to cure COVID-19.

What the Record Shows

During a press briefing, Trump asked medical advisors whether disinfectant approaches or UV light could be explored as treatments, framing it as a question to researchers, not a recommendation to the public. His exact words were 'Is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning?' While the statement was imprecise and widely criticized, it was a question directed at medical professionals, not a directive to citizens. Media coverage overwhelmingly presented it as a recommendation.

Common Narrative

The Trump tax cuts only benefited the wealthy.

What the Record Shows

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 reduced tax rates across all income brackets. According to the IRS data and the Tax Foundation analysis, the average taxpayer in every income group saw a reduction in federal taxes. The standard deduction was nearly doubled, benefiting millions of lower and middle-income filers. The bottom 80% of earners received about 35% of the total tax benefit in dollar terms. Whether the distribution was proportionally fair is a legitimate policy debate, but the claim that only the wealthy benefited is not supported by the data.

Common Narrative

Trump's foreign policy made America less safe and alienated all allies.

What the Record Shows

During the Trump administration, the Abraham Accords normalized relations between Israel and four Arab nations (UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco), a historic diplomatic achievement. NATO allies increased their defense spending commitments after years of decline. No new foreign wars were initiated. The administration also brokered a deal with the Taliban that, whatever its merits, represented the first formal step toward ending America's longest war. Reasonable people can debate the effectiveness of the overall approach, but characterizing it as universally destructive ignores documented outcomes.

Common Narrative

Trump was found guilty of collusion with Russia to win the 2016 election.

What the Record Shows

The Mueller investigation, after nearly two years and $32 million spent, concluded that 'the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.' This is a direct quote from the Mueller Report (Volume I, page 2). While the investigation did document Russian interference efforts and led to charges against several individuals for other offenses, the central allegation of Trump-Russia collusion was not established.

Common Narrative

Unemployment was not actually low under Trump; the numbers were manipulated.

What the Record Shows

The Bureau of Labor Statistics, an independent agency that has used the same methodology across administrations, recorded unemployment falling to 3.5% in late 2019, the lowest rate in 50 years. Black unemployment, Hispanic unemployment, and female unemployment all reached historic lows. These numbers use the same U-3 measurement that was used under Obama, Bush, and Clinton. The BLS methodology was not changed by the Trump administration.
